Seated Figure with Bowl – West Mexico, circa 300 BCE – 300 CE

An authentic Pre-Columbian pottery figure from West Mexico, attributed to the Jalisco tradition and dating to approximately 300 BCE – 300 CE. The figure is modeled in a seated position on a chair, with bent legs and an upright, formal posture that conveys authority and ceremonial presence. The individual wears a tall headdress and large ear ornaments — prominent signifiers of elevated status or ritual importance within ancient Jalisco society — and raises a shallow bowl in one hand, an element widely interpreted as an offering vessel or ceremonial implement.

Shaft Tomb Figures & Their Significance

Figures of this type were placed within the elaborate shaft tombs that are the defining archaeological feature of Protoclassic West Mexico. Unlike the monumental temple complexes of central Mexico, the shaft tomb cultures of Jalisco, Colima, and Nayarit expressed their spiritual and social world primarily through ceramic sculpture — figures of warriors, shamans, ballplayers, musicians, and individuals engaged in ritual activities that illuminate the social fabric of ancient West Mexican life.
