Chancay Painted Ovoid Amphora – Coastal Peru, Circa 1100–1400 CE

This elegant ceramic amphora originates from the Chancay culture of coastal Peru, dating approximately 1100–1400 CE. The ovoid form is adorned with striking black, red, and cream geometric decoration, and features applied lug handles for carrying or suspension — a superb and documented example for collectors of ancient ceramics or Andean art.

The Chancay culture flourished along the central coast of Peru between approximately 1000 and 1470 CE, before being absorbed into the expanding Inca Empire. Chancay ceramics are among the most distinctive of the pre-Columbian Andes, characterized by their cream-slipped grounds, bold black painted geometric and figural motifs, and expressive modeled forms. Vessels such as this amphora were produced in significant quantities and served both utilitarian and funerary purposes, often placed in tombs as offerings to accompany the deceased.
