A traditional Kuna (Guna) nuchu figure from Panama, dating to the mid to late 20th century. Hand-carved from lightweight balsa wood and dressed in custom cotton clothing featuring vibrant orange and black geometric patterning in the Kuna mola tradition, this figure represents a protective spirit central to Kuna healing practice.

The figure displays the characteristic simplified form of nuchus: a slender upright body, no arms, and a minimally carved face defined by a pronounced brow and nose. These figures were used by healers (inatuledi) during ritual ceremonies to help expel harmful spirits (ponis) believed to cause illness. After healing, nuchu figures were often kept and passed down through generations, accumulating both spiritual potency and familial significance.

The Kuna & the Mola Tradition

The Kuna (officially Guna) are an Indigenous people of Panama and Colombia, primarily inhabiting the San Blas archipelago and the Darien region. They are internationally celebrated for their mola — a form of textile art created through reverse applique, in which layers of brightly colored cloth are cut and stitched to create intricate geometric and figurative designs. Mola textiles are among the most recognized and collected forms of Indigenous textile art in the Americas, held in major museum collections worldwide.

The clothing on this figure reflects the bold geometric design language of the mola tradition, with its layered orange and black patterning adding visual vitality and cultural authenticity to the carved form.
